There is a stream at the end of the garden running under the unique beautiful octagonal dovecote (a listed building). This was built across The Camlais brook in the 18th century so the house had the great advantage of possessing a natural water closet.
The Camlais flows into the River Usk beside the house, which provided salubrious conveniences below whilst the doves lived in the upper storey, surmounted by an elegant weather-vane. Across the ancient stone bridge is a 1½ acre walled garden – now home to the resident peacocks that roam the estate. A narrow suspension footbridge of iron was built by Crawshaw Bailey in approximately 1850 and spans the river a little way below the house.
This part of The Usk Valley is a very beautiful place, largely because of the good husbandry and far-sightedness of earlier generations who cared so much for the land. Visitors are welcome to walk in the grounds and along the river.
